Multi-Touch Points for Effective CDL Driver Recruiting

Why One Message Isn’t Enough to Fill Your Trucks

If you’ve been recruiting CDL drivers for any length of time, you already know this: drivers rarely respond to just one message. Whether you're hiring for long haul, regional, or local routes, one phone call, one email, or one text won’t get it done. The most successful recruiters rely on a multi-touch approach, a repeatable process that puts your message in front of the right drivers using different communication methods over time.

Start With a Call:

Phone calls still matter. Your first call should be short, relevant, and focused on grabbing attention. Introduce who you are, why you’re reaching out, and what opportunity you have.

Leave a voicemail if needed, and let them know you’ll follow up by text and email so they can reply in whatever way works best for them.

Follow Up With a Text:

Texting is one of the most effective ways to reach drivers. A short, friendly message can go a long way. Be direct, include the basics, and ask a simple question to encourage a response.

Example:

"Hi Jason, we have a local CDL-A route out of Nashville with great home time. Think it might be a fit? Let me know if you’d like details."

Add an Email:

Some drivers prefer email so they can review job details on their own time. Keep your email short and include only the key points: pay, route, location, and how to apply.

If possible, include a photo, testimonial, or link to your company site to build credibility. Make sure there's a clear next step, like replying or calling back.

Keep Following Up:

If you don’t hear back, don’t stop. Wait a couple of days and try again. Send a new text or leave another message with a slightly different angle. Mention a benefit, highlight something new, or ask a quick yes/no question.

Most hires happen after the fourth or fifth touch. The key is staying consistent without being pushy.

Why It Works:

CDL drivers have a lot on their plate. They’re balancing long hours, dispatch calls, and family time. Even if they’re interested, they may not be able to respond right away.

By reaching out multiple times through different channels, you stay top of mind and increase your chances of getting a response when the timing is right.

Final Thoughts

CDL recruiting isn’t about blasting one message and hoping for the best. It’s about building a smart, multi-touch process that combines calls, texts, and emails, each one short, clear, and respectful of the driver’s time.

If you’re not getting the response you want, don’t change the offer. Start by changing how often and how consistently you follow up.
